To celebrate National Bird Week, BirdLife Australia and the Birds in Backyards team have come together to bring you the third annual Aussie Backyard Bird Count between Monday 17 October and Sunday 23 October.

Last year, more than 42,000 people participated, with over 1 million birds counted. Check out the results from the 2015 Aussie Backyard Bird Count here.

You too can celebrate National Bird Week by taking part in the biggest national citizen science project in Australia. To get involved all you need are 20 minutes, your ‘green patch’ of choice, and some keen eyesight (or binoculars).  Find out how to join in by visiting the Aussie Backyard Bird Count website.

Simply record the birds you know and look up those you don’t on the ‘Aussie Bird Count’ app or their website. You’ll instantly see live statistics and information on how many people are taking part near you and the number of birds and species counted not just across your neighbourhood but the whole of Australia.

Not only will you get to know your local birds, but you’ll be contributing to a vital pool of information that will help measure how Australian birds are faring.
