St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a weed which is in flower from now until around the end of January. Its bright yellow flowers make it easy to identify and now is a good time to control it.

St John’s wort spreads by seeds and lateral roots. A single plant increases in size by growing outwards from the roots in concentric circles. It spreads rapidly in both agricultural settings and conservation areas, can outcompete other species and is difficult to control once established.

Council is currently inspecting for it around Bemboka, Coolagolite, Mogilla and Warrigal Range, but there are also isolated patches in other localities. For control information and identification landholders can read the DPI information sheet or call Bega Valley Shire Council on 6499 2222 or visit their local agricultural produce store. Council can also come out and help if you’re having trouble identifying it.
