You are warmly invited to a koala information workshop being held at The Crossing Land Education Centre on Saturday 11th August 2018 between 9am and 4pm.
The workshop is being organized by The Crossing and the NSW Saving our Species Program.
The main purpose of the workshop is to discuss, plan and provide training for the volunteer contribution to the next phase of the koala monitoring program, to be undertaken in the area between Cuttagee Creek and the Bermagui River, to the south west of Bermagui. The Crossing is organizing this part of the program.
Other aspects of koala conservation that we will be sharing knowledge about will be:
- How we are monitoring the koala population and how volunteers can contribute
- What we know about the distribution, habitat preferences, genetics, disease and conservation status of these koalas
- Threats to the population and how we are trying to manage these
- Rehabilitating koala habitat
- Cultural burning and its contribution to koala conservation
- The NSW Koala Strategy -what’s in it for koalas locally
There will also be a scat and eucalypt leaf/gumnut display to help us learn more about identifying fauna and eucalypt species.
A hearty morning tea and lunch will be provided.
Fieldwork training will involve travelling and walking a small distance to one of our grid-sites and undertaking a search for koala evidence at the site. We will also visit one of the Crossing’s habitat rehabilitation plots. For those participating in the training, please bring a pair of gardening gloves.
No previous experience in koala surveys is needed to join the volunteer program.
RSVP: You are most welcome to join us for the day. If you would like come, please RSVP to thecrossing@thebegavalley.org.au with the message subject: Koala Information Workshop.
