World Environment Day, celebrated on 5 June, is the United Nations’ most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
Above all, World Environment Day is the ‘people’s day’ for doing something to take care of the Earth or become an agent of change. That ‘something’ can be focused locally, nationally or globally; it can be a solo action or involve a crowd – everyone is free to choose.
Bournda Environmental Education Centre has been hosting an annual dinner to celebrate World Environment Day for the last 39 years. The dinner has always been fun, delicious and inspiring. Organising a table is a great way to spend an evening with friends.
This year, the guest speaker is Bob Debus AM, former NSW Environment Minister.
Student art and writing on the 2016 theme: Go wild for life – zero tolerance for the illegal wildlife trade, will be displayed at the dinner and then in local libraries throughout the Bega Valley.
The venue for 2016 is the new Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre and a great meal is being planned for Sunday 5 June from 6pm.
